Age verification hitting bluesky?? At least its not yet requiring your govt issued id or anything, but stepping that direction. I don’t know how I feel about age checks, does it actually protect kids when parents aren’t involved? I can’t say anything there, but it really does feel like its about ready to hurt the rest of us, requiring us to whip out ids and personal data for anything done online. This is a real problem that is hard to solve, and reasons why it has not been solved yet.

Interesting catch from the HN discussion over his article that came out yestereday. I scanned it yesterday and it has some really fascinating diagrams showing different phases of the web being open, to being siloed, to somewhere that we are trying to make it easy to publish, and retain ownership. I don’t know enough about bluesky, but the core is build on the AT protocol, you can self host your own instance, you can build different front ends for it. So rather than having siloed instagram, FB, twitter, there are clones of those platforms that read the same data from everyones data, that they have the option of self hosting.

I like this distinction between Mastadon here. Mastadon can also be self host, but its data aggregation is decentralized, so each instance is fragmented and cannot have a complete view of the data. The way that the ATproto does its aggregation is quite fascinating and feels right for an open social platform. I’m probably missing something, but if you are posting to one of these platfoms publically, why not have the data available to all of them, if you don’t want it shared it probably belongs somewhere more private anyways and there are platforms for that.

This represents the first sign in to this device.

This will be my 3rd pixel 6 since 2021, One shattered screen and one blown battery. My first one was brand new, the first new phone i’ve had in years. That phone only proved to me that new flagship models make no difference to me, I had been running pixel 3 refurbished for many years before.

Social media sucks become a bunch of people yelling “fake news” at each other and propping up their political candidate as the savior of everything. Elon bought twitter and fractured it. The communities are no longer here, and I have to dig through so much political posts to see post on tech and engineering its not worth it anymore.

update from a year later and It’s been great, I check socials like once a week hoping to find better things, but it all seems like the same BS. The Crypto bros have moved on to AI so hard that I just cant stand watching most of them yap about something that they have no understanding of and how much AI does such a better job at, how you are fomo by not following the new shiny thing that no one will talk about next week.

Few Apps #

My wife gets on me all the time for running it so lean. It’s getting harder and harder to just have the few apps you want and use a browser for the rest. Each store, each vehicle, each doctor are needing their app more and more today. What do I know, probably next to nothing about their apps, but it just feels so wrong to install an app that could have been a website. I’ve seen the shady shit facebook does through their apps that turns out to be protected by drm law created a decade before anyone ever saw a smart phone.

Bluesky is more like Twitter than X is

Bluesky is almost excatly like twitter was when I joined years ago. It’s gone crazy lately bogged deep in politics, bots, and ads. I’ve seen like two scroll pages of ads in a row, its nuts. What I did not know before Joel pointed out here is that the feed I am looking at is my following feed, its only feed of people I follow in descending order. On bluesky you get to pick your feed!!! This feels like tweetdeck did back when we were able to run that. You could tune in search terms and save them it was glorious. Bluesky has some really interesting ones that you can use like popular with friends, only posts, my bangers, that have a pre defined algorithms.

Today I learned that the docs in postiz are a bit behind, (fantastic docs btw, they are to the point, and cover almost all of what you need). The docs state that you need to include an R2 bucket to handle uploads.

This issue shows that more work has been done, one of which is local storage. The compose file they use in the quick start has the required env variables to set this up.

looking into my running instance I can see my images there.
